September Summary:
As seen in the chart below, September featured large moves in commodity markets but not so much in the US major equity averages.  Crude oil continued it’s solid year +6.6% in September (+21.75% YTD).  Lean Hogs and Live Cattle prices advanced sharply following flooding caused by Hurricane Florence.  Corn and Wheat continue to decline as crop yields remains healthy and uncertainty remains over tariffs with China.  Japan’s Nikkei had a standout month finishing +6% while in the US, the Dow Jones was +2% while the small cap Russell 2000 index was -2.1%.

A more in-depth look at the US equity market heat map for September shows Banks -3.5%, Social Media -5% while Industrial’s were +1.05% and Energy +5%.  A few stand out names Google -4.5%, FB -6.5%, TWTR -19.5%, XOM +5.1%, JNJ +2.5%, PFE +6%, BA +6%, CAT +7.5% and HD +2.7%.
